MSND: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

3rd - 28th September 2019

For the first time in the 150 year history of Alexandra Palace, its basements were opened up to the public for a theatrical performance. The cavernous atmosphere of the basement spaces were utilised by RIFT to create a liminal dream space.

Beginning in a 1930s film studio on the eve of the first TV broadcast, the audience were thrust into the forest at the heart of A Midsummer Night’s Dream where lovers, fairies and actors are all enchanted.

Magic was found in the nooks and crannies of the hidden passages the audience discovered alongside the Lovers, the Fairies and the Mechanicals. This was a historic opportunity to see the basements of Alexandra Palace as no one has seen them, or Shakespeare, before.
